In the uk the zander is listed a species under the live import of fish act ilfa and require a special licence to stock or hold them in a water.
They are most abundant in east anglia although in recent years have been introduced into other regions and countries across europe. It is a popular game fish and has been introduced to a variety of localities outside its native range. Between the docks at bristol and up to hempsted you will find some of the best canal zander fishing in the uk with fish well into double figures.
Zander tend to rest on the bottom not aggressively feeding during the day time but come up in the water at dusk and through the night to attack small fish such as roach perch and their main preference seems to be small zander. Zander are perfectly equipped for catching their prey in the hours of darkness or in heavily coloured water due to its extra large eye. Zander are wide spread throughout europe and often caught for food as they are tasty and have large white flaky flesh.
Zander for instance prefer deep coloured water and are nocturnal in their habits. Zander thrive in large well oxygenated waters such as reservoirs gravel pits and large rivers. Zander are predominantly a shoal fish whilst pike are solitary.
In water over 60 feet seems to be best but sometimes they ll be in less than 40. Zander are not as widely distributed as either pike or perch but large populations do exist in some rivers and canals. They feed on live and dead coarse fish often working in shoals to round up their prey which comprise mainly of silverfish in the 4 6ins bracket.
Zander do not mind feeding in floodwater or strong flows pike will prefer steadier water or slacks.
